This year marks the 10th anniversary of Confucius Institute, the Confucius Institutes, Chinese and foreign host institutions around the world had celebrated this festival together by holding a variety of activities. As the Chinese host institution of the world’s first “Music Confucius Institute (MCI)”, Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM) had successively completed a series of multiple activities: led by Chairwoman Guo Shulan, the MCI Board Members traveled to Denmark and attended the third “MCI Board Meeting”, later they traveled to Geneva University of Music in Switzerland and conducted inspections about the establishment of the second MCI; led by Vice-Chairwoman Miao Jianhua, an art troupe traveled to Europe and conducted a concert and exhibition tour, and later took part in the “2nd MCI Music Festival”; CCOM teachers and students performed at “Confucius Institute Day Celebration” in Beijing and dedicated a lavish present to the 10th anniversary of Confucius Institute.

From Sep. 26 to Oct. 6, 2014, an art troupe constituted by Vice-Chairwoman Miao Jianhua, Prof. Hu Zhihou, Prof. Wang Jianhua, Associate Prof. Ma Xianghua, “Amber Quartet”, young teachers and excellent graduate students, and two excellent young artists Wang Zheng and Liu Chang from the Conservation and Research Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage at CCOM successively visited the Confucius Institute at Graz University, the Confucius Institute at The University of Vienna, the Confucius Institute at Erfurt University of Applied Sciences, the Confucius Institute at University of Duisburg and the Confucius Institute at The Royal Danish Academy of Music (RDAM) and held 6 comprehensive cultural activities. This is CCOM’s second participation in the Confucius Institute Headquarters’ “Three Tours” activity (performance tour, lecture tour and exhibition tour) after the first participation in the “Confucius Institute Grand Spring Festival Gala” in the United States in 2012, as well as the first performance and exhibition tour after CCOM became the Chinese host institution of the world’s first MCI.

This activity features “the integration of the traditional and the modern, the East and the West, music and paintings” and consists of concerts, art exhibitions and lectures. The concerts presented a dozen of classical Chinese pieces and a few western pieces, striving to have the audience hear the full range of Chinese music through special selections and gain a general understanding about different styles of Chinese music. During the concerts, some foreign audiences were invited to the stage to experience Chinese instruments in a relaxed and happy atmosphere. Along with the concert, an art exhibition “Ancient Qiuci Grotto Frescoes” was held at the concert site. Qiuci (located in the Kuche County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China) was an important city along the “Silk Road”-an important passage for Chinese and Western cultural exchanges in the history. A large number of exquisite Buddhist grotto frescoes were remained there, many of them are about musical and dancing content, which is a historical testimony of the music cultural exchange between China and foreign countries. Every time when the art troupe arrived at a place, the European audience would be delighted with the high-level musical performances, interesting interactive activities and profound art exhibitions, brimmed with enthusiasm about Chinese culture.

During the performance at the Confucius Institute at Graz University on Sep. 27 morning, Mayor Spokesman of Graz Mr. Andreas Molnar, Vice-President of Graz University Mr. Peter Riedler and the Chinese and Foreign Directors of the Confucius Institute at Graz University delivered addresses successively. Many local citizens attended the high-level Chinese musical performance at close range and extended their ardent cheers and applauses. In the afternoon, the art troupe traveled to Vienna-the City of Music and held the second concert at a time-honored concert hall at Palais Palffy. Arranged by the Confucius Institute at University of Duisburg, the art troupe held two performances at Burggymnasium Essen and Heinrich-Böll-Gesamtschule Bochum on Sep. 29 and Sep. 30 respectively, which probably were the most dynamic and joyous sessions among the whole activities. Most audience are middle school students and their teachers and parents, they expressed their sincere welcome for the visit of the art troupe. Before the concerts, the two principals of the two middle schools and an officer of the Confucius Institute at University of Duisburg Susanne Löhr made addresses and showed their welcome. It is worth mentioning that, during President Xi Jinping’s visit to Germany in March, his wife Ms. Peng Liyuan visited Burggymnasium Essen-a school of deep friendship with China. There are a well-established students’ orchestra as well as Chinese learners in this school. Before the concert, a student called Patrick introduced the program in Chinese and won a round of applauses. After the completion of the program, our musicians were invited to sit among the orchestra and played some pieces including “The Canzonet of Yimeng Mountain” with Chinese and Western instruments, bringing the concert to a climax. After the concert, many students followed the musicians, they asked questions about instrumental performance and expressed their admiration for the concert, and were unwilling to leave.
